About PHPO
Professional Hockey Performance Organization
A Community for Hockey Performance Professionals
PHPO is a private community connecting the strength coaches, sport scientists, and performance staff working across professional hockey.
As a member-only space built for people who keep the game running behind the scenes, PHPO is here to help share ideas, talk through challenges, and stay connected with peers who understand the work.
Why PHPO Exists
In hockey, the best lessons rarely come from a textbook — they come from networking.
Since the beginning, coaches and performance staff have learned from each other through side talks, texts, or quiet moments on the road.
PHPO was created to give those conversations a brand new, more powerful home, where knowledge and mentorship are easy to share and available to everyone who contributes to performance at the professional level.
- Exchanging practical knowledge that applies directly to the job.
- Building mentorships between experienced and emerging professionals.
- Encouraging open communication across teams and organizations.
- Strengthening the professional network that supports the entire game.
Who’s Here
PHPO brings together the professionals who make hockey performance happen — strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists, athletic therapists, nutritionists, and support staff from across professional hockey.
Our members come from every level of the game: the NHL, AHL, ECHL, European leagues, and elite development programs. Some are just getting started, others have spent decades in the field, but all come here to stay connected and learn from one another.
Behind the scenes, PHPO’s staff helps keep that network running — organizing events, coordinating member resources, and supporting the community so the focus stays on meaningful connection and shared knowledge. PHPO is supported by an advisory group made up of active coaches, sport scientists, and performance staff from across professional hockey. They help ensure that everything we do — from discussions to resources — reflects the real demands of the job.

Our History
Prior to organizing the Strength Coaches Association of Professional Hockey (SCAPH) there was an informal group who took the lead on creating the structure that would be the main point of contact for the NHL on all issues related to performance enhancement, player testing, combine evaluation and nutrition. This group was led by Roger Takahashi (Vancouver Canucks), Reg Grant (NY Rangers), Mike Bhan (Phoenix Coyotes), and Ray Bear (Atlanta Thrashers). Led by Roger, their passion, vision, and commitment brought together strength and conditioning coaches from every NHL team and AHL affiliate in efforts to grow the profession and become recognized by NHL Leadership and team management.
SCAPH as an association was formed in 2017 with Reg Grant (NY Rangers) as president and Mike Potenza (San Jose Sharks) as Vice president. Reg and Mike added the formal structure of officers, an executive committee and committee roles for NHL initiatives (visiting room equipment, players testing, NHL combine, website development). Since inception, SCAPH has brought together all NHL and AHL performance resources that are employed by each team (strength coaches, nutritionists, sports scientists and high performance directors).
